Lawn and flowerbed borders
There are almost no limits to creativity. Lawn and flowerbed borders can be made of different materials such as metal, wood, plastic or stone.
So you can decide which version you prefer for your garden design and equip your flowerbeds and lawns with the right kind of flowerbed edging to suit your wishes.
What is the difference between a lawn edging and a flowerbed edging?
The terms "lawn edging" and "flowerbed edging" mean roughly the same thing. Which term applies to you depends on the intended use.
If you want to surround your lawn with a matching border, it is called lawn edging. If, on the other hand, you are decorating your flowerbeds, the term is "flowerbed edging". In some cases it is also called a border or flowerbed edging.
But in the end, it is always a border whereby you separate a certain area of the garden from the rest. So don't get confused by the different terms and focus on choosing materials that suit your taste.
What are the advantages of borders and lawn edging?
Bed and lawn borders serve several purposes. First and foremost, of course, they are a visual element that can play an important role in garden design.
With proper borders flowerbeds, paths and lawns can be clearly separated from each other. Thanks to the countless different materials, there are almost no limits to creativity and flowerbed borders can be chosen for any garden.
Lawn edging and flowerbeds have practical functions in addition to visual decoration of the garden. Matching borders, for example, make it easier to mow the lawn in the border area and prevent unwanted grass from spreading to neighbouring flowerbeds. Bed borders also help to keep plant roots in check.
Bed borders: What are the options?
If you are planning to use lawn edging or flowerbeds when decorating your garden, you will quickly discover that there are many different options.
So it's worth taking some time to plan and research the various options available. After all, the flowerbed edging you choose has to blend in with the garden and compliment the planting perfectly.
Above all, the material used for your lawn or flowerbed edging plays an important role. There is a wide range to choose from. Whether steel, wood, stone or sturdy plastic - you know best which option is right for your garden.
Bed edging made of Corten steel
Corten steel bed borders are becoming increasingly popular and can now be found in countless gardens. A special feature of corten steel is its distinctive rusty appearance, which gives bed edging made of this material a unique look.
The fact that Corten steel bed edges rust may at first glance seem unattractive and speak of a short lifespan. In reality, corten steel is a very durable structural steel that has long been used not only for bed edging and lawn edging, but also for building facades, for example.
Corten steel rusts only superficially. Immediately underneath the rust a protective layer of firmly bonded phosphates or sulphates is formed, which prevents further corrosion.
As a result, lawn and flowerbed edgings made of Corten steel will acquire a beautiful rusty appearance over time. However, there is no further damage to the material. So you don't have to worry about having to replace your flowerbed edging any time soon. On the contrary, you can be sure that the weather-resistant material will last for many years and will be a real decoration for your garden design.
Stainless steel edging
If you don't want your borders and lawn edges to become rusty over time, stainless steel edging is ideal.
Stainless steel is particularly durable and will not rust unless the protective layer is damaged. By installing your stainless steel edging correctly you can be sure that it will last a long time and will not need to be replaced in the near future.
Despite its stability, stainless steel edging can be laid flexibly, in curved lines, depending on the design, so this material is not only suitable for rectangular flowerbeds and lawns.
Use stainless steel edging for lawns and flowerbeds in places where you and your family spend a lot of time, for example, because the stability of the edging you install is particularly important there.
Metal Lawn and Garden Edges
Metal lawn edging is widely used in many gardens. In addition to stainless steel and Corten steel, lightweight metals such as aluminium or hot-dip galvanised sheet steel are also used.
Depending on the design, the different elements of the metal lawn edging or flower bed edging can be screwed together before they can be installed in their final position in the ground.
Thanks to the wide variety of different metals and shapes, metal borders are suitable for almost any garden.
Aluminium edging
Aluminium is a particularly light metal. You can therefore install aluminium borders yourself. You can, for example, combine them with stones for lawn edging or use them for edging trees.
Aluminium is to a certain extent resistant to rust. It is also relatively stable. However, you should avoid putting too much stress on the edges of a bed made of this metal. Therefore, it is not recommended to use aluminium in areas of the garden where there is too much traffic.
Lawn edging made of hot-dip galvanised steel sheet
If you use sheet steel for your lawn edging, it must always be hot-dip galvanised. Otherwise, it won't take long before they start to rust. Galvanisation prevents this and ensures that lawn edges are not exposed to the weather unprotected.
Lawn edging made of hot-dip galvanised sheet steel can be laid in a very flexible way. In addition to straight lines, curved lines can also be laid without problems. You should, however, avoid a large radius, as otherwise the sheet could become warped.
As hot-dip galvanized sheet steel is much lighter than Corten steel and stainless steel, it is also relatively easy to lay lawn edging made of this material.
Wooden lawn edging
Wooden kerbs are also very popular. Not only are they relatively inexpensive, but they also have a timeless look. Wooden bed borders are therefore a great choice, especially for gardens with a natural design.
Like plastic bed borders, wooden bed borders are also available in various versions. As well as practical wooden rolls that are stapled together, there are also, for example, plug-in borders that are particularly easy to assemble and woven bed borders.
Wooden borders per metre
Like plastic borders, wooden borders are also sold by the metre. These are halves of wood that are stapled together and allow for flexible adjustment to the shape of the respective bed during installation. This is especially useful if the beds in your garden do not have straight edges and so the border must follow a curved line.
They are usually made from spruce or pine and pressure impregnated to ensure the longest possible life of a wooden border. Assembling them is not particularly difficult. However, it is recommended to fill the previously excavated groove with a layer of gravel to ensure a stable support. Depending on environmental conditions, such wooden edging will last for about 10 years, though further treatment with a suitable wood stain may extend the life of the edging considerably.
Edging made of willow wicker
Wickerwork or hazel hedges give your garden a particularly rustic look. Sturdy willow hedges are particularly popular with the environment-conscious gardener. Since the individual elements are provided with stakes, wicker edging or hazel borders are also particularly easy to assemble.
To extend the life of willow hedges, you should regularly treat them with a suitable tree care oil. This also applies if the willow edging has already been treated with oil at the time of manufacture, as constant exposure to sunlight can cause the bark to crack.
Concrete lawn edging
Concrete is an extremely flexible material which can also be used for edging lawns and flowerbeds. A great advantage of concrete edging is that it is extremely durable and virtually indestructible to external influences.
Therefore the material can impress with especially long lifetime. At the same time, concrete kerbs are very easy to maintain. They do not need to be painted or treated regularly in any other way.
In addition, concrete allows you to create a precise border, where straight and curved lines are not a problem. Concrete kerbs come in a wide variety of shapes. When buying, you can choose between large or small lawn edging or round concrete elements that can be installed flexibly.
Since concrete lawn and flowerbed borders are also available in a variety of colours, it is usually not difficult to find a suitable option that blends in with the overall look of the garden.
Before opting for concrete, however, you should be aware that laying a curb made of this material involves a rather large amount of work. Furthermore, concrete is not always the most visually appealing solution. It is therefore advisable to find out in advance whether such a flowerbed edging suits your ideas or whether another solution would be more suitable.
Stone edging for lawns and flowerbeds
Stone is an excellent choice for edging lawns. They are durable and long-lasting. They are also available in different colours, shapes and designs.
This makes the choice even wider. This means that you can find suitable edging stones for almost any garden, although it's not always easy to make a decision because of the wide range.
Popular natural stones for bed and lawn borders
There are a number of natural stones that can be used as flowerbed and lawn borders, each with its own benefits.
For example, bed borders made from the following natural stones are particularly popular:
Granite bed edges
Granite is an especially hard natural stone that is also characterised by a wide range of colours and excellent workmanship. Granite is heat-resistant, unbreakable, frost-resistant and insensitive to moisture. This means that you don't have to worry about the lifespan of your granite kerbs.
However, it is quite expensive and its heavy weight makes it relatively difficult to transport. Also, untreated quarried stone often has very sharp edges, meaning that granite kerbs for lawns and flowerbeds pose some risk of injury.
Sandstone kerbs
Sandstone kerbs are very popular because of their light, natural colours. They therefore go particularly well with colourful flowerbeds. As sandstone consists mainly of grains of sand, it is very easy to work with and adapt to your own ideas. However, the material has a good tensile strength.
Compared to granite, sandstone is also cheaper. However, it cannot compete with granite in terms of frost resistance and durability. To avoid damage to sandstone kerbs, the natural stone must be impregnated.
Curb of travertine
Travertine is another natural stone that is very popular as a material for bed borders. The soft sedimentary stone is easy to work with. The appearance of travertine is very similar to marble. The low-maintenance natural stone is available in colours ranging from white to yellow and from red to brown.
In addition to its low price, the advantages of travertine include its resistance to weathering and frost. Over time, however, the colour of the stones may fade. Therefore, you should expect that the appearance of lawn edging and flowerbeds made of this natural stone can change considerably.
Limestone edging
Limestone is another soft stone which, with its yellowish-beige colour, is particularly suitable for Mediterranean-style gardens.
Limestone is inexpensive and frost-resistant. It is also easy to work with and lay. In contrast to travertine, it is also characterised by excellent colour stability. However, bed edgings made of this natural stone are only partially weatherproof and can sometimes be stained by salt from frosting.
Bed and lawn borders made of brick
Of course, natural stone does not necessarily have to be used to finish lawn edges and flowerbeds. Bricks can also draw attention to your garden and give your borders a personal touch.
You can choose between new bricks and bricks that have been treated to give them an antique look. If you're looking for an economical solution for your lawn and flower bed borders, you can contact demolition companies and buy old bricks from them, often for a small fee.
In addition to bricks, you can also use tiles to create an unusual lawn or flowerbed border. With a mortar foundation, you can provide good stability and at the same time let your imagination run wild with the design.
However, compared to natural stone, concrete or steel, bricks are only durable to a certain extent. With such an inexpensive and creative material choice, you should be prepared for the fact that your curb probably won't last for several decades.
Plastic curbs for lawns and flowerbeds
Of course, lawn and flowerbed edging doesn't have to be steel, metal or stone. You can also use plastic or rubber flowerbed edging.
They are usually much cheaper and you don't have to compromise on durability. In many cases, plastic lawn and flowerbed borders are also made from recycled materials. This ensures that their use does not put unnecessary strain on the environment.
Plastic or rubber lawn and flowerbed edging is available in a wide variety of shapes. The material is usually sold in rolls by the metre. It can be corrugated or completely straight.
There are also plastic lawn edging and flowerbed edging that look like a small fence or wall. Some are even fitted with solar-powered light-emitting diodes so that different parts of the bed edging are illuminated in the dark.
Depending on the model, plastic bed borders can be inserted into the floor with little force or require digging a suitable groove into which they can be placed. When using lawn or roll borders, care must be taken to ensure that the borders overlap slightly so that there are no gaps in the finished bedding.
Despite their long lifespan, it must be kept in mind that plastic lawn edging is comparatively less durable. While, for example, a stone lawn edging can easily support the weight of your body, this is not the case with plastic and rubber.
Planting borders
If you don't like wood, stone and concrete or steel and metal, a planted edging is a fine alternative. With this option, you can create a distinct structure and give your garden a particularly natural look.
There are many plants that can be used as borders. In addition to small shrubs and perennials, various grasses are also suitable. The choice of plants to use as borders depends on one hand on your personal taste and on the rest of your garden design.
Bed borders include the following plants, among others:
Disadvantages of plant borders
Despite their attractive and natural appearance, plant borders do, of course, have one significant disadvantage. Compared to other materials such as corten steel or concrete, they require regular maintenance. Depending on the type of plant, this can be time-consuming and, in addition to sufficient watering, you may need to use a hedge trimmer from time to time.
In principle, there's nothing wrong with this. However, you should be aware of this before opting for a hedge trimmer for a bed of plants. If you cannot or do not want to go the extra mile, you are better off choosing a different bed edging solution.
Bed borders as protection against slugs and snails
Most gardeners know from experience how annoying slugs can be in their own gardens. The pests sometimes multiply very quickly and may eat young plants with gusto.
A bed border in the form of a snail barrier is particularly suitable for protecting flowers and vegetables against snails. This type of border has an outwardly curved top edge which provides an insuperable barrier for slugs.
Unlike slug pellets, slug fencing is an environmentally friendly slug control measure that avoids unnecessary risk of poisoning to wildlife, pets and children.
Installing a slug fence is done in much the same way as a normal bed or lawn fence. The only difference is that the fence should protrude slightly higher from the ground so that the slugs cannot climb over it.
Lawn edging - a practical tool for creating paths
If you want to create paths in your garden, a lawn edging strip is the ideal tool for this. Depending on the model, you can create straight or curved paths. Lawn edging creates a clear boundary between the lawn and the path.
The choice of material depends not only on your personal ideas, but also on which path you want to take. While you can make free decisions for straight garden paths, for curved paths you will inevitably need materials which offer as much flexibility as possible. However, since the choice is quite large, from concrete and stone to wood and plastic, you will have no trouble finding a lawn edging material that meets your expectations.
To ensure that the process goes smoothly, it is advisable to make a sketch of your planned garden path in advance and then measure and mark it out so that you know exactly where you need to remove the lawn and dig the soil. A simple spade is usually sufficient. However, as even a relatively narrow path requires the removal of a relatively large area of soil, do not underestimate the amount of work required.
Once you have placed grass borders around the edges of the path and backfilled it to the required extent, you can finish the path itself according to your ideas. Gravel, for example, has proven to be particularly convenient to use: it allows you to fill a new path in a short time, whatever its layout, and is available in many colours and sizes.
Creative ideas for successful flowerbed edging
When it comes to creating bed borders, there are virtually no limits to your creativity. So you can let your ideas run wild and follow your personal taste in choosing your bed borders.
Use natural materials like wood and stone or artificial borders made of plastic, steel and metal or even concrete. When implementing your ideas, always look at the bigger picture and make sure that the borders of beds and lawns fit in well.
This does not necessarily mean that you should aim for the most inconspicuous look possible. Sometimes it is a good idea to use strong contrasts in flowerbed borders and, for example, to combine clean lines of concrete slabs with plantings.
Alternatively, combining different materials can also help to give your borders a personal touch. For example, try combining stone and metal by inserting galvanised steel or aluminium foil in the joints between the stones.
If this is too time-consuming for you, gabions may also be a good idea for bed borders. Gabions are special metal baskets that are filled with stones after they have been laid. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are therefore suitable not only as borders for beds, but also for building small walls, for example.
Whatever idea you come up with for bed edging, you should know that good planning is crucial to a successful end result. After all, depending on the material and type of construction, installing borders and lawn beds involves a considerable amount of work and is probably not something you will want to do again next year.
Make your own bed borders
Of course, you don't have to restrict your garden design to buying ready-made lawn and bed borders. You can also make your own bed borders.
This allows you to create particularly individual borders. However, don't underestimate the amount of work involved. Finally, the edges of a homemade bed should also be quite stable.
In principle, there are no limits to your creativity if you want to make your own bed borders. However, you should make sure that the materials you choose are as long-lasting as possible and largely weatherproof. Otherwise, you will soon have to replace your own construction.
A well-designed, homemade bed edging can be a great addition to your garden, however. Try, for example, simple wooden boards from the DIY shop which make excellent borders for raised beds.
For an even rusticer look, borders can be made from tree trunks cut to length. Of course, this is not suitable for every garden. However, in the right setting, tree trunk borders are sure to be an unusual feature which will immediately catch the eye of your visitors.
Proper planning of flowerbed borders and lawn edges
If you want to decorate your flowerbeds with a matching border or add a border to your lawn, it's not too complicated. However, you should plan your procedure well in advance so that the work is as easy as possible and you are happy with the end result.
To do this, it can be very helpful to make a drawing. This will ensure that you do not forget anything important at the planning stage and that your project is completed successfully in the shortest possible time.
Materials required to install the kerb
For your project, apart from the actual materials for the bed borders, you will of course need some equipment to place the border correctly.
Generally, the following utensils are required to install a lawn edging or flowerbed edging:
You can use wooden stakes and construction string to mark out the border in advance so that you know exactly where to dig. If you have planned a circular bed border, you can use a garden hose as a marker.
Use a shovel to dig a furrow in the ground as required for the border. The excavated soil can easily be collected in a wheelbarrow.
Finally, use a rubber mallet to tap the edging into the ground at the intended location. Use a spirit level to make sure that the end result is level. Note that it is very important to use a rubber mallet. If you use a normal steel hammer you will unnecessarily damage the lawn or the edge of the flower bed, no matter what kind of material is used.
Laying concrete lawn edging
Depending on the type and shape of the material you choose, your lawn edging cannot, of course, simply be driven into the ground and you will need a concrete foundation, for example.
In this case, you will need appropriate raw materials for mixing the concrete and, ideally, a concrete mixer. If necessary, you can rent one for the day from many DIY shops. The costs for this operation are usually reasonable. Small quantities of concrete can of course be mixed by hand if necessary.
Once you have set the various elements in the concrete foundation as planned and checked that no stones have moved during the work, all you have to do is wait for the concrete to dry. Depending on the width and length of the foundation, this may take some time.
Only when the concrete has fully cured can the edge of the lawn be fully loaded. If you like, you can now seal the joints between the individual elements with mortar. Otherwise, the turf edge is finished and is particularly stable because of its substrate.
Laying lawn edging and flowerbeds without concrete
In principle, a concrete base is not a prerequisite for laying a continuous bed edge or lawn edging. However, for heavy materials such as stones or concrete slabs, it makes sense to use a layer of gravel and sand as a base and compact it with a hand tamping machine before installing the curb itself.
This requires a little more time. However, it will help you to prevent individual elements from settling over time and making your carefully prepared kerbstones look untidy.
Safety when installing bed and lawn kerbs
In principle, the installation of lawn kerbs or flowerbeds is not exceptionally dangerous. However, care should certainly be taken when installing them.
It is important to make sure that no one trips or twists in the hole, especially when digging large holes for lawn edging, for example.
Also note that lawn edges can sometimes have quite sharp edges, depending on the material. We therefore recommend wearing gloves during installation. This will prevent unnecessary cuts to your hands.
Finally, you should also be aware that the edges of a bed of appropriate height may be associated with a certain risk of tripping. Especially if you have children who regularly play in the garden, you should definitely consider this when planning.
Which edging is right for my garden?
Because of the great variety of materials and shapes, choosing the right edging can sometimes be difficult. It's impossible to make a general statement about which edging is right for your garden.
So it's worth considering what's important to you before settling on a particular choice. If you prefer a natural look, bed borders made of willow or natural stone are a good choice.
On the other hand, lawn borders made of concrete or stainless steel will give your garden a more modern look. If you're looking for a mostly inexpensive option that's particularly easy to install, a simple plastic edging might be a good choice for you.
It doesn't matter which solution you choose in the end. Take the time to get inspired by our wide range of lawn and flowerbed borders. We're sure you'll find what you need to complete your project.
